Mobility Buying an electric bike: what do you need to know?
June 24, 2024
When shopping for an electric bike, one is making a sustainable and practical choice to enhance personal transportation convenience. Before getting started, it is essential to understand some key concepts: the assistance system, the price, and the advantages and disadvantages of this type of bike.
What is the difference between an electric bike and an electric-assist bike?

When discussing electric bikes, the terms can be confusing. However, there is a significant difference between an electric bike and an electric-assist bike (EAB).

An electric bike is a bike that can be powered by an electric motor without the need to pedal. The motor can provide all the energy needed to propel the bike, which can be advantageous for those looking to reduce their physical effort. Generally, this type of bike can go up to 45 km/h and requires registration with the SNCA.

In contrast, an electric-assist bike (EAB), as the name suggests, only assists the cyclist while pedaling. Also called a pedelec, the electric assistance is limited to 25 km/h. The electric motor of this type of bike only activates when the cyclist pedals and stops when the cyclist stops pedaling. The level of assistance can be adjusted according to the effort the cyclist wishes to exert. The EAB is ideal for those who want a boost during their travels while remaining active.

The electric-assist bike will allow you to go further while making less effort than with a traditional bike. It will also help you resume sports and throughout your practice.

How to choose your electric bike?

There are a multitude of types of electric bikes suited to different uses and environments. Here are some of the most common:

  • The electric city bike is perfect for urban commuting. It is very easy to add a luggage rack to carry your belongings.
  • The electric mountain bike is designed for rough terrains and unpaved roads. It comes in two models: full suspension for better shock absorption and hardtail for greater control.
  • The electric road bike is designed for speed and efficiency on asphalt. It is generally lightweight and aerodynamic.
  • The folding electric bike is a practical solution for those who combine biking with public transportation. It folds for easy transport and storage.
  • The electric cargo bike is ideal for carrying heavy loads or children. It has a large carrying capacity.
  • The fast electric-assist bike, also called a speed pedelec, can reach speeds up to 45 km/h. It is suitable for long trips in urban or suburban areas.

Each bike has its specificity and should be chosen based on the intended use.

What is the average price of an electric bike?

The cost of an electric bike can vary considerably depending on many factors such as the brand, model, technical features, and additional equipment. In most cases, the average price of a good quality electric bike ranges between €1,600 and €2,000. However, entry-level models can be found starting from €800, and some high-end or specialized electric bikes, like cargo bikes, can cost up to €5,000.

It is important to note that the initial purchase price is only part of the total cost of an electric bike. Annual maintenance costs, which can be up to €200 depending on your usage and the parts to be replaced, should also be considered.

Therefore, it is advisable to thoroughly evaluate your needs and budget before making your choice.

Is there a subsidy for purchasing an electric bike?

The Luxembourg government has introduced a subsidy of up to 50% of the price of a new electric bike, up to a maximum of €600.

The terms and conditions are available here. The bike must be purchased before 30 June 2024 and the application must be submitted no more than one year after the date of purchase.

Conditions are not exhaustive. The full list of conditions to be met can be found here.

Can you convert your bike into an electric bike?

Transforming a traditional bike into an electric bike is possible and can offer an economical solution for those who want to benefit from electric assistance without investing in a new bike. This conversion is done using a conversion kit that generally includes a motor, a battery, and a controller. There are different types of conversion kits. Some kits allow the front wheel to be motorized, others the rear wheel, and still others the crankset. The choice of kit depends on your needs, budget, and the configuration of your bike. Before proceeding with the conversion, it is crucial to check the compatibility of the kit with your bike.

How to extend the battery life of your electric bike?

Whether you have chosen a new or used bike, it is important to take care of your bike, especially the battery. Proper maintenance is essential. When purchased, a battery can last up to approximately 200 km per charge, so it is important to do everything possible to preserve it for a long time.

The battery of an electric bike is lithium-ion and generally, its lifespan is 5 to 6 years. This duration will vary depending on the number of recharge cycles, which is often between 500 and 600 recharges.

Over time, the battery will wear out, so here are some tips to make it last longer:

  • Keep it between 30 and 60% charge during long periods of non-use.
  • Store it in a cool, dry place.
  • Use a neoprene cover to protect it from extreme temperatures.
  • Let it discharge once or twice a year to reset its electronic board.

What are the disadvantages of an electric bike?

Despite all their advantages, electric bikes have some drawbacks.

  • Their weight is generally higher than that of traditional bikes due to the battery and motor. This can make handling more difficult, especially if you have to ride with a discharged battery.
  • Battery life can be a problem for some users. Depending on the type of journey and the intensity of the assistance used, the range can vary. Therefore, it is crucial to plan your trips well to avoid running out of battery.
  • Maintenance costs can be higher than for a traditional bike. Specific parts of the electric bike, such as the battery or motor, may require special and expensive maintenance.
  • Battery lifespan: even though they are designed to last several years, batteries eventually lose capacity and need to be replaced.
Beware of theft!

Electric bikes are also prime targets for thieves due to their high value. Therefore, it's important to take precautions to prevent theft.

  • Equip yourself with a quality lock. U-locks or chain locks with padlocks are generally recommended for their resistance.
  • Park your bike in a secure and well-lit area to deter thieves.
  • Adding an alarm or a GPS tracking system can be an additional advantage for recovering your bike in case of theft.
  • Finally, consider insuring your electric bike. With InsureMyBike, insure your bike from the moment of purchase.

Remember: the more difficult you make it for thieves, the more likely they are to give up.
